Eco Council

Eco-Schools is a global programme engaging millions of children across 64 different countries, making it the largest environmental schools programme in the world.

Eco – Schools enhances pupils skills, raises environmental awareness and improves the school enviornment.

Here at Bowerham we have a very special and dedicated team of “Eco – Warriors” who support the school in being as environmentally friendly as it can be!

Keep updated with any of our Eco – news via this page! We can’t wait to share with you the exciting projects we will take part in!

“Stay green and support your Eco – team!”

The Eco warriors have been working hard to create an action plan and have decided on the three topics they would like to focus on.

These are: Biodiversity, The School Grounds and Transport.

We will continue to learn about the importance of avoiding a monoculture of plants in our environment and how we can support this by planting a wide range of plant varieties around the school grounds. We will also continue working with Where the Wildlings Are to develop our school grounds so they are more biodiverse and provide a calm, nurturing space for the children.

Alongside this, we are introducing a new focus on transport, encouraging children to explore different types of transport, consider how people travel to and from school, and begin to understand how transport choices can impact the environment.

Through these three key areas — biodiversity, school grounds and transport — children will develop a growing awareness of how they can care for and protect their local environment.

School Grounds: We will continue working with Where the Wildlings Are to re-wild our school grounds, promoting a healthy and thriving ecosystem across the school site. Alongside this, we are creating a community garden on the school field, providing increased opportunities for outdoor learning, wellbeing and shared experiences for all members of our community.

Biodiversity: The Eco Team has planted a wide range of trees, bushes and shrubs alongside the main playground to create a sensory garden. This space will provide children with a calm, quiet area to support their wellbeing and sensory needs. We will continue to plant more trees across the school grounds to increase habitats for wildlife, helping to create a richer and more biodiverse environment for our whole school community.

Transport: In school this year, we will be developing a stronger focus on transport and how our travel choices can impact the environment. We will support children in learning about different ways of travelling to and from school and how choosing active or shared transport can help to reduce our CO₂ emissions. We are going to work together as a school community to promote more sustainable transport choices. This will include encouraging walking, cycling and scooting where possible, talking about car sharing, and helping children to understand how small changes in how we travel can make a positive difference to our environment and school community.

Where The Wildlings Are

The Eco Council are busy continuing our whole school ‘Where the Wildings Are’ project. We have more exciting plans to further develop our school grounds for wildlife and growing food, alongside increasing opportunities for outdoor learning!
We will continue the development of a new willow tunnel as part of our community garden. This area will also include a pathway, dedicated growing spaces, newly planted trees and wooden benches, creating an inviting space for outdoor learning, wellbeing and community use.

The School Council have a sad message…
